Below are examples of student work for this course in 2018. The assignments differed in some ways, so please do not take these as an examples of exactly what you need to do, but rather as examples of the elements you have also been asked to do. I will do what I can to make clear the differences between what was asked for in 2018 and what was is asked for this year.

Research Proposal

The research proposal in 2018 was worth 20% of the final grade and included a breakdown of when the student was going to have parts of the assignment completed, a longer introduction and historiography section, and more detail was required regarding what they were going to do with the outputs (and they were required to do 3 timeline entries for their final assignment). But this should give you some idea of what is expected. (Used with permission of the student, but name removed).

The sample size this student is very large and not what is required for this assignment, but I will note that a larger sample size will mean you can do more meaningful analysis, so if you can create such a sample quickly, it will probably make the rest of the assignment easier for you.

Timeline entry

The timeline below contains just two entries, one by me, and one from the same student that the example research proposal is written by, so you can see how this came to fruition. These entries are also in the shared spreadsheet for 2020. 

Visualisations

This is not a full set of examples of the types of visualisations that can or should be done, but a selection of some really excellent examples of student work from 2018. I've placed the Dear Data examples at the top to assure those of you worried about your technical prowess that you don't need to be a computer wizard to do well on this assignment! You'll note one of these is entirely hand-drawn. The other was created in PowerPoint.  All examples shared here, anonymously, with permission of the relevant students.

Juxtapose or Annotated Images

Depictions of Settlers and Settler life in Early New Zealand 1840-1900
Visual Migrant Propaganda
For my visualisation I have used a Juxtapose to compare two images, an original sketch/watercolour and published lithograph, to highlight the changes made in the reproduction. I have also used Interactive Image to draw attention to specific pictorial elements within the images that were included to specifically make them appeal to prospective migrants.

By using these two digital visualisation formats the extent to which images were manipulated to become propaganda for colonisation can be analysed.

The final report below is also from the same student who wrote the example research proposal, blog post, and timeline entry, so you can see the full progression of these assignments. I have not included their visualisation as they used a type of visualisation I am not encouraging for 2020.
